In the little village of northern Greece where my mother grew up, everyone knew what pomegranate was. The women ate pomegranates for increased fertility, the elderly in the village to fight cardiovascular disease. If you had a stomach ache, my grandmother immediately put fire on the stove and cooked tea on the pomegranates that they had to drink.
Pomegranate is a fantastic powerful fruit that has been used for thousands of years, not just in my mother's village. It is packed with important antioxidants, vitamins and has become a symbol of health.
Founder of Rhoa Products
Rhoa Products is a small family business with a big heart that has a big passion for pomegranates. The founders have roots from Greece and have grown up on pomegranates in various forms but found that the supply on the Swedish market of super fruit was anything but fair.
- The fruit is extremely powerful and good in its simplicity but in the Swedish market there was no product that we thought represented the fruit fairly. Either it was packed with sugar, diluted or products with additives sold in the stores. We wanted to show the Swedish market how pomegranate tastes really, with its powerful and sweet-sour taste, says Eva, who is one of the founders of Rhoa products.
Rhoa's products currently consist of an organic pomegranate juice of 100% pomegranate without any additives and an organic pomegranate marmalade with 75% fruit without any preservatives or colorants. More premium products on pomegranate are planned and are expected to come in the spring of 2019.
The company started in autumn 2017 and launched its first product in February 2018. Rhoa's products can be purchased online at www.happyfoodstore.se and at selected Hemköp stores, ICA stores, delis, health food stores, cafes, hotels and pharmacies.
We cooperate with a cooperative in northern Greece that provides unemployed landowners with organic pomegranate plants. These farmers receive instructions on how to grow and care for the pomegranate crops. Two years later, the farmer starts selling organic pomegranates to the cooperative. In this way, the cooperative grows larger.
The name Rhoa originates from ancient Greek and in some dialects, Rhoa was the name of pomegranate. It is believed to have a connection with the land goddess Rhea.
